Idaho Malting Barley Industry Profile

Our more than 5,000 barley producers are known for their quality and reliable production, innovation, productivity and environmental stewardship.  Many of our producers operate their own on-farm storage facilities, with a high level of awareness and experience in identity preservation.  Idaho barley producers have a long history of supplying top-quality malting barley to the state’s two malting facilities and customers in other parts of the US, Mexico and Asia.

Industry Partners

Anheuser Busch / BARI Busch Agricultural Resources, Inc., based in St. Louis, MO, is the single largest buyer of Idaho malting barley and seed.  BARI operates a 4-million bushel elevator (was doubled in capacity in 2003), seed cleaning facility and 8 million bushel (125,000 MT) malt plant in Idaho Falls, ID. In 2004, the company doubled their malting capacity at Idaho Falls to  16 million bushels (250,000 MT).  In addition, BARI operates the largest private malting barley breeding program in North America at Fort Collins, CO, with test plots in Idaho Falls, ID.

BARI's - Barley Quality Standards

Great Western Malting Co. – Great Western Malting CO, based in Vancouver, WA, is the second largest buyer of malting barley in Idaho.  Nearly half of the company’s total malting barley purchases come from Idaho, estimated to be worth more than $25 million annually to Idaho barley producers.  About 80% of that barley is purchased through direct contracts with producers and local elevators.

Great Western has two US malt plants, with one located in Pocatello, ID, with a capacity of 6 million bushels (92,000 MT) malt annually, which requires about 5.5 million bushels of barley.  Total capacity at the Pocatello and Vancouver, WA, plants is about 250,000 MT.

What Buyers Want - GWM Preference

Coors Brewing Company Coors Brewing Co., based in Golden, CO, has been contracting malting barley production directly with Idaho growers for 35 years.  In addition, they operate a 9-million bushel barley handling facility and 165-acre barley breeding research farm at Burley, ID, and a 120,000- bushel grain storage facility in Buhl, ID.  Barley purchases from Idaho growers exceed $16 million annually.

Coors is the only major US brewer to use exclusively 2-row malting barley varieties (developed and owned by the company) in their beers and they use only US grown barley.  Moravian 37, their leading 2-row proprietary variety grown in Idaho, has a 10-13% yield advantage over Harrington variety.

Coors - 2002 Contract Barley Program Overview

Grupo Modelo - Mexico's largest brewing company - Grupo Modelo - is building a new 6.5 million bushel (100,000 MT) malt house in Idaho Falls, ID.  The plant is expected to be on-line in early 2005 and will process barley from the 2004 crop.  Barley requirements are estimated at about 5.8 to 6.0 million bushels of two-row malting barley.  Modelo has about 63% share of the domestic Mexican beer market and its leading beer brand - Corona - is the leading imported beer in the U.S.  Corona holds a 27.4% share of the import market and 3.1% share of the total US beer market.
